Later in the day, State defeated Elon College 5-1. Barragan and Glover both won 3 set matches while Nicholls, Katrina Gildemeister, and Roberts won in straight sets. Nena Bonacic was upset at number one by former Wolfpack player Sarah Benhaim.
Wolfpack player Marissa Gildemeister missed both matches due to illness but should be back for the Davidson and UNCC matches. The Wolfpack begin the spring as the 54th ranked team in the nation.
The Wolfpack competed in the ACC Indoor Championships in Chapel Hill January 22-25. Marissa Gildemeister scored a first round victory over Nat Carratala 6-4, 6-0 before falling in a three set match to Stacy Gingold of Virginia in the round of 16. Francie Barragan advanced to the quarterfinals of the consolation draw with a victory over Andrienne Pavelko of Maryland. She then fell to Amy O'Donnell of Virginia. In doubles, Katrina and Marissa Gildemeister won matches their first two rounds to advance to the quarterfinals of the main draw before losing to Megan Miller and Kathy Sell of Duke. The Wolfpack will not participate in the Virginia Tech tournament beginning on February 5, they will next see action against Appalachian State on February 21.
Ecuador native Pilar Piana has joined the Wolfpack tennis team. Piana is a freshman who has been the number one under-18 player in Ecuador since she was 16. She has also received a WTA world ranking. Pilar brings international experience to the Wolfpack team and is expected to contribute immediately to the Wolfpack program.
Curt Speerschneider, a member of the NC State men's tennis team from 1995-97, has been named assistant coach of the women's tennis team.
